Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has fired back at Jose Mourinho for what he considers an unfair comment over his managerial spell with the club.
It all started when Jose Mourinho told the Telegraph that Erik ten Hag has received more support from the Man United hierarchy than he did when he was at the club.
According to him, if he was given the same support as Erik ten Hag, he has no doubt he would have achieved a lot with the club.
The Portuguese tactician, who has been out of managerial duties since his dismissal by Roma, said former Manchester United CEO Ed Woodward made his job difficult due to an uneasy relationship with the football administrator.
Mourinho’s claims apparently unfazed Erik ten Hag, who has refuted the legendary football manager.
Speaking with ESPN Brasil, ten Hag said Mourinho had all the support he needed, had the leeway to sign the player he wanted, and was the best-supported manager by the club after Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Apart from Mourinho, the manager didn’t get the players they wanted, and that is what you need,’ Ten Hag said.
Away from the wrangles on who got the most support by Manchester United, Erik ten Hag has underperformed at Manchester United this season. The Dutchman has been blamed for Manchester United’s dwindling fortunes.
Jose Mourinho’s comment was a metaphor for pinpointing the Dutch’s underwhelming performance despite being handed huge financial support to sign the player he wanted, unlike his tenure at the club.
Mourinho was sacked as Manchester United manager in 2018 but won the Europa League, EFL Cup, and Community Shield for the club.
Erik ten Hag will enter the last lap of his Manchester United contract next season but is facing an uncertain future amidst the club’s dwindling fortunes.
