Except a miracle happens before June 31, the 12 years journey of Edinson Cavani at Paris Saint-Germain is over. His contract with the French Ligue 1 side will expire in the next 23 days from now, and PSG has not shown any intention of extending the contract of the 33-year-old Uruguayan striker.
To make matter worse, during the 2019-2020 season and the season before that, injuries didn’t give Cavani a fair chance to prove to the club that he is still the same top striker they signed in 2013. Hence, 27-year-old Mauro Icardi was brought in on loan from Inter Milan. Icardi was able to convince the manager of the club, Thomas Tuchel, well enough to earn a permanent deal weeks ago.
This implies that the services of Cavani, who has practically become second fiddle to Icardi since he joined the club in 2019, is no longer needed. PSG can’t bank on the fact that the Uruguayan iconic striker is the all-time highest goals scorer of the club with 200 goals in 300 appearances.
But the 2019-2020 season has been one of the worst of his football career. He only managed to play 14 games in the French Ligue 1 and mostly from the bench. And in those 14 games, he only managed to score 4 goals and made 2 assists.
This situation has forced football fans who have been following his career to start wondering, ‘what next for Cavani?’ Where will he go when he becomes a Free agent at the end of this month? Will he go back to his second home country, Italy, or back to Uruguay?
According to his teammate at PSG, Ander Herrera, Cavani has always wanted to have a taste of Spanish football. According to Herrera who is a Spanish international and started his professional football career in Spanish La Liga, Cavani always ask him about life in Spain.
“I know Cavani wants to play in Spain. He loves the league and the country, he asks me about it a lot”, Herrera told AS.
There are reports that Spanish club, Atlantico Madrid are interested in his signature. Reportedly, the Madrid based club has been training to get him since January but Cavani decided to stay put at PSG with the hope of landing a contract extension. But unfortunately for him, nothing like that has happened.
Also, reports say Italian Serie A side Inter Milan are interested in his signature. If a miracle does not happen for him before June 31, Cavani might either switch to Spain or Italy, all things being equal.
