Manchester City forward, Raheem Sterling is presently tied for a second all-time goal scorer in the competition with Rooney’s former Manchester United teammate, Paul Scholes, with 24 goals. Raheem Sterling has claimed that he wants to break Wayne Rooney’s record of 30 Champions League goals.
When City takes on Real Madrid in the first leg of the semi-finals at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, Sterling will be hoping to add to his total.
“It’s like anything – once you make your professional debut, it’s on to the next thing, scoring your first goal,” the 27-year-old, who has three goals in the Champions League this season, said. After scoring your first goal, as a person, you must always want to improve, and that is exactly what I do every season.
“I try to think about how I can improve and all of the other things that come up.” I was hoping to get the England record, and that’s exactly what I’ll do.” After being picked for media responsibilities at City’s pre-match press conference, Sterling, whose current contract expires at the end of next season, refused to reveal his intentions.
“At the moment, I’m just glad to be playing, happy to be participating with the club,” the former Liverpool star, who has previously been linked with a move to Real, added. That, I believe, is the most crucial factor. “It would be selfish of me to discuss any contract situation at this time, and I’m just delighted to be playing football and see where we are at the conclusion of the season,” he said.
After finishing the second last season, City is aiming to reach the final for the first time. “Every season, we’re always aiming to contend for all the big trophies, and the Champions League is the one we haven’t quite got our hands on yet,” Sterling added. It’s one on which we’re concentrating.”
