Arsenal legend Tony Adams has joined the bandwagon of people who believe that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the current captain and highest goal scorer of the club might leave this summer.

The contract of the Gabonese will expire in 2021 and there have been talks between the player and the club for a possible extension which has not yielded anything positive yet.

As that is still ongoing, the 30-year-old Arsenal star is being pressured by the President of Gabonese Football Association Pierre Alain Mounguengui to leave Arsenal to a more ambitious club so that he can win titles.

Also, some of such ambitious clubs like Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona and Arsenal’s rival Chelsea have been in pursuit of his signature in case Aubameyang decides to jump ship.

Tony Adams said the major reason why Aubameyang could leave the club is the recruitment policy of the club which does not portray the club as an ambitious club that wants to win titles.

Recall that from the days of the former coach of the club Arsene Wenger, Arsenal is known for buying less established players and selling them off when they have become popular for huge sum of money.

Wenger was heavily criticised for this by fans who always believe that the coach was only concerned about using the players to make money for the club rather than win titles for the fans.

Tony Adams urged the current coach of the club, Mikel Arteta, not to follow such a footstep and to ensure that he doesn’t allow the club to sell his best player (Aubameyang).

“I loved Arsene Wenger’s principles, that no player was bigger than the club, and he moved players on if it made sense for the club financially”, Adams told Sky Sports.

“He was strong with that and he got Champions League football every year but it did stand in the way of recruitment – so we have become a club that is selling the best players.

“If I was a coach I’d be saying: ‘Don’t sell Aubameyang at any price, we need to recruit, bring players through the academy and keep our best players.”

Aubameyang has scored over 49 goals in 75 appearances in all competitions since he joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in 2018.
