Timo Werner has finally found the back of the net for Chelsea for the first time in 15 Premier League games. The 24-year-old German forward scored his first Premier League goal under the new coach of the club Thomas Tuchel against Newcastle United on Monday, February 15, 2021.

In the Premier League game which was played at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, Timo Werner pushed as much as he could to ensure that he found the back of the net. It was almost looking like another game where the striker would have a series of attempts but no goal.

Before he scored his first Premier League goal in 2021, he had the best chance in the match against Newcastle in the first 30 minutes of the first half. Unfortunately for Timo Werner, the German striker could not do much with Marcos Alonso‘s header. The best he could do was to play it wide.

Minutes later, Werner was in the penalty box trying to end his goal drought. His low shot towards the net was reflected into play and Olivier Giroud who replaced injured Tammy Abraham was in a position to pick up the loosed ball for Chelsea’s first goal of the night in the 31st minute.

Timo Werner continued to ask questions and his pressure on Newcastle United’s defense finally paid off in the 39th minute when he slotted in the ball after moments of scrambling. He had to wait for further confirmation before he started celebrating the goal.

The goal was Timo Werner’s first goal since he scored his 4th Premier League goal on November 7, 2020. His 4th goal was against Sheffield United.

Besides the fact that the goal against Newcastle United was very important for the confidence of the striker, it was even more important for Chelsea. Timo Werner’s goal and assist against Newcastle United helped Chelsea to move from the 5th spot to the 4th spot on the league table.

The club now has 42 points in 24 games after recording 12 league victories, 6 draws, and 6 defeats. They are 11 points away from first-placed Manchester City.

As for Timo Werner, the Germany international has now scored 5 Premier League goals and provided 8 assists in 23 league games since he joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig on July 1, 2020, for a transfer fee worth €53million.

After scoring his first goal under German Tactician, Thomas Tuchel, Timo Werner revealed that the fact that his countryman always screams to him in German has been helpful to him.

“It’s helped me that someone can scream at me in German! [Tuchel’s] a really good guy, has a good idea of the football we want to play and, when we have more and more training sessions with him, we will get better and better,” Werner told BBC Sport.

“A few weeks ago we were somewhere and nowhere and we were a lot of points behind fourth place. We want to keep going. [We’re] only four points to second place and lots have said we won’t reach the top four at the end of the season, but here we are.

“We have a good shape, we’re back on track.”
