Recall that Tottenham Hotspur terminated the contract of Serge Aurier by mutual consent on August 31, 2021, which means that the 28-year-old Cote d’Ivoire right-back is currently without a club.
Aurier joined Tottenham Hotspur from Paris Saint Germain on August 31, 2017, for a transfer fee worth €25 million. Then, he was seen as a sensational signee but that didn’t last too long before the club’s fans started taking notes of his inadequacies.
Under the reign of Jose Mourinho between 2019 and 2021 at Spurs, Serge Aurier was always a subject of criticism whenever things were not going too well with the team especially when he was on the pitch.
Mourinho ran out of patience with him and had to leave him on the pitch in most games especially in the 2020-2021 season. Aurier continued to suffer such treatment until Mourinho was sacked towards the end of last season.
Before Mourinho was sacked, Aurier had tried to exit the club since it was obvious that he was not wanted at Tottenham Hotspur. But he was not able to achieve that.
Ahead of the 2021-2022 season, Serge Aurier thought he would get more opportunities under the new coach of the club, Nuno Espirito Santo. But that was not to be.
When the season commenced, Nuno preferred to use Japhet Tanganga and Matt Doherty ahead of the Ivorian right-back in the first three Premier League games of the season.
Hence, Aurier intensified his push to exit the club. Unfortunately for him, his agent and Tottenham Hotspur were not able to get another club for him before the summer transfer window closed.
A statement from Spurs read: “The Club can confirm the departure of Serge Aurier following the mutual termination of his contract.”
While Serge Aurier said: “I have enjoyed my time at Spurs and would like to thank the Club and the fans.
“But I feel now is the right time for me to move onto a new challenge.”
Arsenal might take the chance to sign Serge Aurier
Arsenal have been struggling since the 2021-2022 season started and they would not mind adding a defender to their squad.
Recall that Arsenal have suffered three defeats in their first three Premier League games so far this season. They have also conceded 9 goals without scoring a goal.
Serge Aurier is ready to stay in England and he is willing to join Arsenal for free, Arsenal’s coach Mikel Arteta might jump on the offer.
Recall that the Spanish tactician was very busy in the summer transfer window in an attempt to strengthen the Gunners. He has already signed 6 players this summer.
There are reports that Arsenal’s board is ready to back Mikel Arteta to bring Serge Aurier to the Emirates Stadium. Hence, before winter, the Ivorian defender might become an Arsenal’s footballer.
