Ryan Giggs Cleared Over Alleged Assault On His Girlfriend And Her Sister

The Former United and Wales player was accused of assaulting his then-girlfriend and her sister and has been in and out of court over the allegations.

The charges however, were withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at a hearing at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday, July 18.

Ryan Giggs, 48, has always confirmed that he was innocent and never assaulted or showed coercive behaviour towards Kate Greville, 38, and didn’t assault her sister Emma.

Judge Hilary Manley gave the verdict that the former Wales national team manager was not guilty on all three counts.

Despite the latest hearing on the case, the re-trial has been scheduled to start at Manchester Crown Court on 31 July.

Jurors failed to reach verdicts after over 20 hours of deliberations following his four-week trial in August last year.

Ryan Giggs was not even in attendance on Tuesday as the judge confirmed that he doesn’t necessarily need to be in attendance.

Who Is Ryan Giggs?

Ryan Joseph Giggs OBE is a Welsh football coach and former player who was born on 29 November, 1973 at St David’s Hospital in Canton, Cardiff.

Giggs is regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, and he played his entire professional career for Manchester United and briefly served as the club’s interim manager.

The Welshman is the son of rugby union and Wales international rugby league footballer Danny Wilson. He was born in Cardiff but moved to Manchester at the age of six when his father joined Swinton RLFC.

Giggs began his career with Manchester City, but joined Manchester United on his 14th birthday in 1987.

He made his professional debut for the club in 1991 and spent the next 23 years in the first team.

After a largely successful career at United, he retired from playing at the end of the 2013–14 season, holding the club record for competitive appearances – 963.

However, towards the end of the 2013–14 season, he became the club’s interim player-manager following the sacking of David Moyes.

He was assistant manager under Moyes’ permanent replacement, Louis van Gaal. Giggs left United in July 2016, following the appointment of José Mourinho.

Ryan Giggs is co-owner of Salford City, alongside some of his former teammates, commonly referred to as The Class of ’92.

What Happened To Giggs?

Ryan Giggs was accused of attacking and assaulting his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, 36; an allegation the 48-year-old has denied and pleaded not guilty to.

The former Wales men’s national team head coach was also accused of assaulting Greville’s sister and was made to face a trial at Manchester Minshull court over the charges.

After a seemingly high point in his managerial career in Wales, Ryan Giggs was arrested by the British police forcing him to resign his position as coach of the Wales senior men’s national team.

Ryan Giggs was accused of inflicting bodily harm on Ms. Kate Greville on November 1, 2020, including an assault on the sister of the victim Emma Greville.

Giggs denied all allegations leveled against him and the court has cleared his name too after jurors failed to reach a verdict.
