Quincy Promes who plays for Eredivisie club, Ajax, was arrested by the police in the Netherlands for allegedly stabbing a family member during a party he organized at a company he owns.

The incident which took place in July, left the victim heavily injured according to reports. The police in the Netherlands started investigating the role of the football star in the incident over three months after the incident.

“We only heard about the incident a month ago. An investigation was then started and this morning (Sunday) led to an arrest,” police spokesman Jelmer Geerds told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

A report by Telegraaf revealed that the incident took place during Promes’ family reunion which the footballer hosted in Abcoude, Amsterdam. During the party, he and one of his relatives were involved in a fight and the footballer decided to stab the victim in the process.

Contrary to this submission, the footballer’s lawyer claimed that the footballer was not at the scene of the incident which implies that he was not involved in it.

“Promes was not on-site at the time of the incident. Promes is fully cooperating with the investigation,” the lawyer said via a written statement.

The victim who has not fully recovered from the injuries he sustained from the incident reportedly pressed charges against the footballer in November 2020.

On Sunday, December 13, Quincy Promes was missing at Ajax‘s training ground which first sparked speculations that the 28-year-old Dutch left-winger was nursing an injury. Later on, it was confirmed that the Netherlands international was not present at Ajax‘s training ground because he was arrested by the police on Sunday morning for allegedly stabbing his family member.

In a statement the Eredivisie club issued to FOX Sports Netherlands, the club confirmed that Promes has been arrested due to the stabbing that happened in July.

“It’s very worrisome but being accused of something doesn’t mean you did it,” the statement read. “It is therefore too premature to say anything about it from Ajax.”

According to reports, Quincy Promes is expected to remain in police custody for three days before the court hearing on the case will begin in the Netherlands. The case against him is aggravated assault which could attract 4 years imprisonment if the football star is found guilty.

Quincy Promes still has four years left on his contract with Ajax which he joined on July 1, 2019, from Sevilla. Since he joined the club, the 28-year-old Netherlands international has scored 21 goals and provided 6 assists in 45 games.

Before he was arrested this season, the left-winger has scored 5 goals and provided 1 assist in 17 appearances in all competitions.
