Ajax have broken the record they set on 19th May 1972 where they became the first Dutch Eredivisie club to defeat another club in the league, Vitesse, 12-1. The Dutch giants broke this record on Saturday, October 24, 2020, when they defeated VVV-Venlo 13-0 in a league match.
Ajax visited VVV-Venlo’s home ground, Seacon Stadion, with just one intention, to avoid dropping more points this season after losing their 4th league match of the season to Groningen 1-0 on October 4.
As expected, Ajax continued their beautiful rebound in the league with VVV-Venlo after defeating Heerenveen 5-1 on October 18. On Saturday’s game, Ajax started tormenting VVV-Venlo in the 12th minute of the game when Jurgen Ekkelenkamp scored the first goal of the match.
Five minutes later, it was the turn of Lassina Traore to enter his name on the scoresheet in the 17th minute. He scored the third in the 32nd minute before he took a break from the scoreboard to allow Dusan Tadic to make it 4-0 in the 44th minute.
The second half of the match resumed like how the first half started. Traore returned to the scoreboard in the 54th minute to make it 5-0 two minutes after VVV-Venlo’s Christian Kum was red-carded.
Ajax’s Dos Santos continued with the club’s goalscoring spree as he registered his name on the scoresheet in the 55th minute. Ekkelenkamp scored his second goal of the match in the 57th minute. While Daley Blind joined the scorers’ chart in the 59th minute.

The 13-0 win was not just a record-breaking win for Ajax, the win helped the Dutch club to move to the top of the league ahead of their closest rival PSV. So far this season, Ajax have won 5 matches and lost a match which gave them 15 points in 6 matches. They are currently 2 points ahead of second-placed PSV.
Ajax’s next Eredivisie match is against Fortuna Sittard on October 31. Before then, they will visit Atalanta to play their second group stage match of the UEFA Champions League. They lost their first Champions League match of the season 0-1 to Liverpool on October 21.
