Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has been snapped up by Portuguese club Benfica as a free agent after his contract with the north London club came to an end last month, and Head Coach Jose Mourinho had reportedly advised the club not to renew his contract.
It’s believed that Vertonghen got a lot of offers from Europe’s elite club including Milan and Sevilla but chose Benfica, the Portuguese club are still in the hunt for reinforcement as they hope to bring Edison Cavani from Paris Saint-German on a free transfer despite competition from newly promoted club Leeds and Atletico Madrid.
Jan vertonghen, 33 years old spent eight years with Tottenham played over 300 times for the club and scored twelve goals but was unable to win a single silverware. Despite that, he was a fan favourite with the Spurs fans and was always shown love; many still find it a big surprise that the coach didn’t want him at the club as they see him as a leader due to his experience in the league and could easily help newcomers such as Japhet Tanganga learn the ropes of the game.
However, it looks unlikely that Tottenham will sign a new replacement for the Belgian international, as academy graduate Japhet Tanganga has signed a new long-term deal with the club and England international Eric Dier has also been used as a centre back in recent times. At the same time, Toby Alderweirreld and Sanchez are seen as the preferred starter for the manager at the backline.
Jose Mourinho has already completed his first signing of the summer with the arrival of Danish international from Southampton Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for a fee reported to be around £19 million-plus add-ons, as he hopes to add some grit and intensity to the club’s midfield, after record signing Ndombele failed to live up to his fee. At the same time, Kyle walker-Peters has been signed by Southampton for an
undisclosed fee.
Spurs are also in the transfer market for a second striker as cover for the captain Harry Kane, and Troy Parrott has been loaned out to Milwall for the season, Bournemouth Callum Wilson and Watford Troy Deeney are rumoured to be on the club’s list.
