Marcos Rojo shocks Manchester United fans as he revealed that the club’s former coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played Harry Maguire ahead of him because the club bought the English defender for £80 million.
Rojo lost his place in the starting line-up in the 2019-20 season which he confirmed was because Solskjaer played Maguire more despite his several mistakes.
Rojo spent six seasons at Old Trafford before joining Boca Juniors in 2021, and he told TYC Sports in an interview that; “In 2019 I was very good in England. I was playing in the Europa League but I was very angry with the coach because he was putting Maguire in the team instead of me.”
“Thank God they have taken him out now and Licha [Lisandro] Martinez is playing.”
“One day I went to Solskjaer’s office to tell him to let me leave for another club or put me in the starting line-up. I said it was wrong that I wasn’t playing.”
“But he told me that Maguire had to play regardless because they had paid so much money for him.”
“He was making huge mistakes every week already and I told Solskjaer: ‘Son of a b****, let me play because this guy is making huge mistakes every week.””
Harry Maguire was formerly the world’s most expensive defender when he was bought from Leicester City for £80m in 2019.
Rojo was forced down the pecking order at center-back after Louis van Gaal signed the Argentine in 2014.
Solskjaer only played Marcos Rojo once in the Premier League before his injuries woes but played him in their 2019-20 Europa League group stages.
Solskjaer then granted Rojo his wish by sending him on loan to Estudiantes in January of 2020 after which he left United to join Boca Juniors on a permanent deal.
The 33-year-old was suspended in September 2022 by Argentina FA and banned him from captaining Boca for a month after he kicked an opposition player in the head during a Superclasico with River Plate.
The arrival of Lisandro Martinez relegated Maguire to the bench with his future now at stake under new Manager Erik Ten Hag.
The last time Maguire played for United was in Europa League against Sevilla where the Spanish team thrashed United 3-0.
