After failing to find a buyer for the Argentine defender, Marcos Rojo is heading back to Estudiantes on loan and is set to leave Manchester United .
The Argentine international who has fairly seen playing time this season, has reportedly agreed to everything with Estudiantes and only needs approval from Man United to secure his exit. Rojo, is said to be happy with this outcome as he and his wife would like to return to their home country to be closer to family members.
Rojo will return to the club that launched his career until the end of the season after Old Trafford bosses were unable to broker a permanent deal for his departure.
Estudiantes’ chairman is the former United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron offered Rojo an escape route after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided the player had no future in Manchester.
Rojo, 29, still has 18 months left on his United contract and has the option for a further season and the Reds may have to hand him a significant pay-off on his £100,000-a-week wages or face having him on the payroll until the summer of 2022. Ouch!
Signed from Sporting Lisbon for £16million in 2014, the South American spent three years with Estudiantes before moving to Europe in 2011 to join Spartak Moscow. Rojo joined the Red Devils when Louis van Gaal was in charge of the club. The main concern with the former Sporting CP player is that he is highly injury prone. In the last campaign, the 29-year-old missed majority of the season due to injury and only started 5 games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, teenage United midfielder James Garner is a loan target for Sunderland. The 18-year-old is well thought of at Old Trafford and has made six appearances for United this season, four of them in the Europa League, one in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup.
United have been struggling this season. With Rashford intended to be fine for six weeks on injury, and Paul Pogba away in an ankle injury, United have failed to earn three points.
After their 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford in midweek, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer indicated that the club, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after successive defeats need quality signings, with Paul Pogba as well as Rashford currently sidelined.
Also, a £30m offer has been submitted for Birmingham City’s 16-year-old Jude Bellingham. Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes remains intent on a move to Old Trafford, but talks between the clubs have stalled, with United currently £10m short of Sporting’s valuation.
United currently sit 5th in the EPL table with 34 points, 30 points under 1st place Liverpool.
