Teddy Sheringham has expressed that Erik ten Hag is incompetent in handling Manchester United and has predicted that the Dutchman will be dismissed by Christmas.
Erik ten Hag At Manchester United
Ten Hag was appointed manager of the Red Devils in 2022 and he has struggled to propel the club to success.
Erik ten Hag had an impressive start to life as boss of Manchester United, with the former Ajax boss leading the club to 3rd place finish on the Premier League table in the 2022/23 season.
The Dutchman also guided the Red Devils to the Carabao Cup title in his first season handling the side.
However, Manchester United have nosedived in subsequent seasons, with the club finishing 8th in the Premier League table last term, amassing just 60 points.
Ten Hag managed to pacify supporters of the Old Trafford side with an FA Cup triumph at the end of the 2023/24 season and that apparently earned him a contract extension.
Following £180 million spent in the summer transfer window, fans were hoping Erik Ten Hag could turn things around.
However, distasteful defeats to Brighton and Liverpool in their first three matches have reignited rumors that the Dutchman could be dismissed in the coming months if Manchester United’s fortunes don’t improve.
Teddy Sheringham Delivers Brutal Assessment On Erik ten Hag
Sheringham is apparently fed up with Ten Hag’s stewardship of the Old Trafford side, and he told betting company Ladbrokes that the 54-year-old is “not good enough” to manage a club as big as Manchester United.
Speaking about the club’s display this term and how much hasn’t changed from last season, Teddy Sheringham said: “When you’re finishing eighth in the Premier League, that’s quite clearly not good enough, for Man United. Full stop. End of story, for me. You’ve got to change what’s going on.
“When you look at the inconsistency of last season, and that has followed on, without a shadow of the doubt in the first three games of this season… you can see there’s been no change whatsoever.”
The 58-year-old added that despite signings made, there is still no “change in the philosophy” and style of play of Erik ten Hag.
Sheringham shared: “Different players, maybe. But still no change in the philosophy, and the way Erik ten Hag wants to play. Look, I don’t want to see people getting sacked.
“It’s not nice to say that people shouldn’t be in certain positions, but he shouldn’t be there. It’s not good enough for Man United.”
Sheringham Claims Ten Hag Will Be Fired In December 2024
Airing his thoughts on when ten Hag would be fired if results don’t improve for Manchester United, the Englishman said:
“Do I think the manager will be there at the end of the season? No, I don’t. I think he’ll be gone by Christmas.”
Manchester United In The 2024/25 Premier League Season
This brash assessment by Teddy Sheringham comes after an embarrassing loss for Manchester United against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 1, 2024.
The Red Devils were battered by Arne Slot’s Liverpool 3-0 in front of their home fans, with Erik ten Hag’s tactical approach pinpointed as the reason why his team lost.
The defeat to the Reds meant Manchester United have now lost two of their first three league fixtures, having suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in match day 2.
They occupy the 14th spot on the log, with 3 points from 3 games, with their only win thus far this season being a 1-0 victory over Fulham on the opening day of the 2024/25 season.
The Signing Of Manuel Ugarte Expected To Improve Manchester United
Anyway, Manchester United are hoping for better fortunes in the coming games, especially following the arrival of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint Germain.
Ugarte’s move to the Old Trafford side was confirmed on August 30, 2021. However, he couldn’t feature against Liverpool as he wasn’t registered for the game.
Manuel Ugarte was, however, unveiled in front of the home fans, and he is expected to immensely improve Manchester United in the midfield department.
When Is Manchester United’s Next Match?
The Red Devils return to action on September 14, 2024, with an away league game against Southampton.
