Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur is the Premier League fixture most fans of the league have been waiting for from the point it became obvious that both clubs are title contenders. The interesting part of this fixture is that both teams have performed almost similarly so far this season.
Hence, the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium tonight, December 16, 2020, at 21:00, will settle a lot of scores as far as the league table standing is concerned. The fixture could also leave things the way they are if the two clubs decide to share points at the end of the delicately poised fixture.
The host who are the reigning champions of the Premier League are going into this match with a long stretched unbeaten home record. In the last 32 home matches that Liverpool have played, they have only failed to win one which means that Jurgen Klopp and his boys have garnered 94 points out of 96 possible points in their home fixtures.
The interesting part of the reigning Premier League champions is that they enjoy scoring loads of goals against their visitors. They have recorded 93 goals in their last 32 home matches.
In their last two home Premier League matches, Liverpool scored a massive 7 goals – 3-0 against Leicester City and 4-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which means that the club’s attack has a merciless home form.
On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying the best form and they have proven to be a big team by beating some of the big teams in the league. Recall that coach Jose Mourinho and his boys have recorded victories against Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United already this season.
As Liverpool can boast of the best attack, so can Tottenham; and the best part of it is that Spurs currently have the best defense in the league as they have conceded the lowest number of goals.
Why Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur is a fixture no one would want to miss is that the two teams are going into the match after recording 7 wins, 4 draws, and a defeat each. They both have the same points (25) but are separated by goals difference.
If Jose Mourinho’s defensive style and counter-attacking combination of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son work, Jurgen Klopp might find it difficult to stop Tottenham. But if the Portuguese tactics fail, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will be on hand to punish the visitors.

Liverpool are going into this battle of the table-toppers with some of their best players still out with various degrees of injuries. The club suffered a scare last weekend when Jurgen Klopp had to move Jordan Henderson from his natural midfield position to defense in their 1-1 draw away to Fulham because Joel Matip had to be taken off in the second half for what looks like an injury worry.
Though there is a high possibility that Matip would be fit for tonight’s match, Jurgen Klopp will wish his best defender Virgil van Dijk is back from his injury and available for today’s game.
Liverpool’s list of injury worries are endless and the list is expanding after almost every match. The good thing is that most of the injured players get a speedy recovery.
Besides Van Dijk, other Liverpool players that might not be seen close to the club’s bench tonight include Thiago Alcantara, Joe Gomez, James Milner, and Xherdan Shaqiri.
On the other hand, coach Jose Mourinho has a couple of injury worries though not as bad as that of Liverpool. He might lead a Tottenham side without Erik Lamela and Japhet Tanganga who are still battling to recover from their injuries.
The club’s loanee, Gareth Bale, could be available for tonight’s game as he reportedly missed the weekend draw against Crystal Palace because of an undisclosed illness. Besides that, the usual suspects, Heung-min Son and Harry Kane are 99 percent available for tonight’s game.
