Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk is not having it with his teammates after Liverpool stumbled on Premier League title hopes with a shock derby loss to struggling Everton at Goodison Park.
Everton scored in both halves through Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to condemn the Reds to an unlikely defeat and boost the Toffees’ survival hopes.
The loss has seen the Reds fail to close the gap at the Premier League top on Arsenal, who saw off London rivals Chelsea 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the same matchweek fixture.
Speaking after the game, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk left no stone unturned as he latched out on his teammates for a poor performance in the game.
The Dutch attributed the defeat to the underwhelming performance of his teammates, insisting they have to do better to stand a chance in the Premier League title race.
“If we play like this, we have no chance to consider ourselves in the title race.
“Everyone has to look in the mirror and look at their own performances if they really give everything.”
Liverpool have now won only one of their last four matches in the Premier League, and are drifting far from the title race. In what has been a difficult chapter in the manager Jurgen Klopp’s push for multiple silverware, the Reds crashed out of the Europa League with a 3-1 aggregate loss to Atalanta, crashed out of the FA Cup with a dramatic quarterfinal loss to Man United, and are losing out on the Premier League title race.
As things stand, Jurgen Klopp’s possible magical farewell has been thrown into turmoil already with the Reds unlikely to add another silverware to the EFL Cup they won this season.
They will return to action at the weekend against West Ham United at the London Stadium, and will hope to get back on track on the title race by returning to winning ways.
