FC Barcelona are still pushing to extend the contract of Lionel Messi as his current contract with the club will expire in less than 6 days from now.

The back and forth between Barcelona and Lionel Messi has been dragging long before the 2019-2020 season ended. Recall that the issue between the two parties became very intense in August 2020 when Messi wrote to the club to inform them that he wanted to leave the club.

After fierce negotiations between the two parties, Messi had no choice but to stay back in Barcelona. One of the reasons Messi decided to stay back at Barcelona was because nobody could pay off his 700 million euros release clause.

Since then, Barcelona have continued to push for Messi to sign a contract extension but nothing concrete has come out. One of the reports that came out recently claimed that Barcelona and Lionel Messi have agreed on terms to offer him a 10-year deal.

In the reported 10-year deal, Lionel Messi is expected to spend two years at Barcelona, two years at Inter Miami and he would serve the last 6 years of the reported deal as an ambassador of the club.

However, the latest reports claimed that Lionel Messi and Barcelona are yet to agree on all the terms that were reported in the aforementioned deal.

The new president of Barcelona Joan Laporta has insisted that his priority is to keep Messi at the club beyond July 1, 2021. With 6 days left in Messi’s contract, reports say everybody at the club is working round the clock to ensure that the deal is sealed before July 1.

One of the issues that have been the problem of the contract extension has been the issue of reducing the wage bill of the club. Reports claimed that Barcelona are planning to reduce the club’s wage bill to 200 million euros.

As it stands, Barcelona are determined to offer Lionel Messi a two-year deal and he might also join Inter Miami after Qatar FIFA World Cup in 2022.

To date, despite all the proposals on the table for Lionel Messi, the Argentine football star has been so busy to pay attention to it which means that the two parties are yet to agree on any term.

Lionel Messi who has been in Barcelona since he started his professional career is currently busy with Argentina in Copa America. His contract with Barcelona might be over before the tournament ends if he is not able to sign a new deal with Barcelona before June 30, 2021.
