Memphis Depay has urged his fans to dream big after signing a two-year deal with La Liga side, FC Barcelona on Friday, June 19, 2020, eleven days to the expiration of his contract with Lyon.
The 27-year-old central forward who is currently on duty with the Netherlands national team in Euro 2020 took to social media immediately Barcelona announced that he has signed for them, to describe how excited he is over his move to the Spanish club.
“Dream big kid. Dream big.
Super excited to join my new club! @fcbarcelona”, he tweeted.
Before the deal was announced, Memphis Depay whose contract with Lyon will expire on June 30, 2021, told the press how much he wants to work under coach Ronald Koeman, the current manager of Barcelona who was a former head coach of the Netherlands.
“Everyone knows that I have been negotiating with Barcelona for some time”, Memphis Depay told a press conference in the ongoing Euro 2020.
“I want to play with Ronald Koeman. Now is the time to wait, but soon there will be news.”
With the two years deal FC Barcelona gave to the 27-year-old Dutch striker, he is now the second top Dutch player that will play under Ronald Koeman in the coming 2021-2022 season.
Recall that Barcelona signed Frenkie de Jong from Ajax in January 2019 for a transfer fee worth 75 million euros. Since then, the Dutch youngster has established himself in the heart of Barcelona’s midfield, and he is expected to enjoy a good connection with Memphis like they do in the Netherlands national team.
Before Memphis Depay became the 20th Dutch player to join Barcelona, the Spanish club tried to sign another Dutch footballer, Georginio Wijnaldum. However, the 30-year-old midfielder decided to leave Liverpool for Paris Saint Germain instead of going to Barca.
So far ahead of the 2021-2022 season, Memphis is the third A-list footballer to join Barca. Recall that Barcelona signed Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia from Manchester City days after the 2020-2021 season ended.
Memphis Depay who joined Lyon from Manchester United on January 20, 2017, for £14.40 million scored 76 goals in 178 games in all competitions for the French club in the last four seasons at the club.
In the just-concluded 2020-2021 season, the Dutch forward scored 22 goals in all competitions and provided 22 assists. He is expected to improve on these numbers when he finally reunites with Koeman at Barcelona.
