Chelsea football club has proven to be in a mission to close the gap with the current Premier League table-toppers Liverpool football club and the second-placed Manchester City based on their activities in the transfer market so far.

Arguably, the Premier League has proven to be the most competitive league in the world but in recent times, that competition has been mostly between Manchester City and Liverpool FC. For instance, from the 2017-2018 season to this current season, it has always been Manchester City.

In the 2018-2019 season, the Premier League table was all about Manchester City and Liverpool football club. Both clubs dragged the first two spots until the end of the season as City won the league title for the second consecutive year with just a point.

This season again, it has been all about City and Liverpool but in a reversed situation. Liverpool is currently topping the league table with a whopping 82 points in 29 games while City is on the second spot with 60 points in 29 games.

While Leicester followed with 54 points in 30 games. And then, Chelsea with 48 points in 29 games. Besides Liverpool and City, points between other teams on the league table are mostly two to six points which show that Liverpool and Manchester City are in a league of their own this season.

This is the kind of gap Frank Lampard says Chelsea intends to close next season. This is why the club is splashing money on their target players in order to be well equipped for next season.

Recall that the club just agreed terms with Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner. They are expected to join up with the rest of the squad in July. Ziyech cost Chelsea £37 million while Werner cost the club £47.5 million.

The fans of the club don’t mind that Chelsea has spent so much money amid the coronavirus pandemic which has hugely affected the revenue of clubs. The peace of mind the fans have as far as the deals are concerned is based on the fact that Werner has scored 26 goals and made eight assists in 32 Bundesliga games this season. While Ziyech has six goals and has made 12 assists from 21 Eredivisie games this season.

Besides the two powerful signings, Frank Lampard is looking at bringing in Kai Havertz, a 21-year-old German midfielder that currently worth over £75 million. This season alone, the Bayern Leverkusen player has scored 16 goals and has made 9 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions. The club is also interested in signing Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell this summer.

On Saturday, Frank Lampard told the press that the owner of the club Roman Abramovich has shown a huge commitment to ensure that the club can compete with other clubs ahead of them and the recent big-money signings are proofs of his commitment.

“One thing I really realised coming into this job, I was here a long time as a player, but as manager people will consistently ask you about your relationship with the board and the owner etc.

“And I hope that this shows how we’ve worked together, all of us, with how we work, with recruitment, scouting and all playing our roles in trying to bring the right players and being joined up.

“So I think we have to be very positive. This is Chelsea Football Club and we want to close the gap. And signings like Timo and Ziyech are both nice statements.”

As they try to close the gap going forward, their priority right now should be maintaining their 4th spot with all their might. The fans are already anxious to see how they will restart the campaign when they meet up with Aston Villa later today.
