The 21-year-old Canadian soccer star revealed that he has been listening to Drake music since he started listening to music, adding that the Canadian rapper who is based in the United States is one of his idols.
Recall that Alphonso Davies who joined Bayern Munich from an American club, Vancouver on January 1, 2019, had the opportunity of playing against Lionel Messi for the first time during the Quarter-final stage of the 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League campaign. Then, Lionel Messi had not left FC Barcelona for Paris Saint Germain.
The meeting between FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich did not end well for Messi as the German Bundesliga side humiliated the Spanish giants 8-2.
In reaction to his first meeting with Messi, Alphonso Davies said he would have rated his encounter with Messi above that of Drake if Messi had given him his matchday jersey.
On the other hand, Alphonso Davies had the opportunity of meeting with Drake when the rapper met with the Canadian soccer team after a World Cup qualification match between Canada and Panama in October 2021.
Davies who is looking forward to playing in Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, did not only have the opportunity of meeting the music icon, he had a chat with the 35-year-old Canadian rapper.
In an interview with One Soccer, Alphonso Davies revealed that the rapper exchanged contact with him and asked the footballer to text him whenever he visits Toronto, Drake’s base.
When asked to choose between his meeting with Drake and with Messi, Davies said: “I think the Drake one because I listened to Drake ever since I started listening to music.
“Drake is one of my idols and I love all his music. My achievement with Messi is playing against him. Unfortunately, I didn’t get his jersey, or that would have surpassed meeting Drake a bit. I would say meeting Drake.”
On the musician’s meeting with the Canadian soccer team, Alphonso Davies added: “He was excited to meet us and the boys, we were all excited.
“He told me good luck and the next time that I am in Toronto to give him a text.”
Canada are on the verge of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They are occupying the third automatic World Cup qualifying spot in CONCACAF with 10 points in 6 games.
Canada have not played in the World Cup since 1986. Hence, Alphonso Davies who has contributed 5 goals since the commencement of the World Cup qualification campaign, dreams of leading Canada to Qatar.
The 21-year-old soccer star said: “As a kid, you dream about playing with your country and that’s what I am doing. Every time I put on the jersey I fight for the country and do everything I can do to win games.
“The World Cup is one of the biggest achievements you can have as a footballer. Some footballers never play in a World Cup. So for us, to make it there and be in that situation means anything can happen. We have the team to do it.”
