Ajax vs Feyenoord: Match Abandoned After Flares And Riot

Ajax were losing 3-0 after 55 minutes before some home fans began to throw flares onto the pitch which led to the match being abandoned.

The match was halted temporarily before half-time and this was due to the fireworks that were thrown on the pitch of play.

However, it was not the first of the day as the same thing happened after the break before officials concluded that it was unsafe to continue with the match.

The Eredivisie released a statement after the match was stopped via social media saying: “The Classic is permanently stopped after repeated fireworks on the field.”

They also added: “More information about how to complete this match will follow later.”

Ajax fans reportedly started the chaos as they tuned on each other in frustration in the first half after Feyenoord went 2-0 up.

Dutch outlet AD even described the incident as “one of the saddest crises in Ajax’s 123-year history”.

Ajax fans were also spotted showing their frustration after the match was abandoned by smashing and destroying the stadium.

Just like the video shared above, some angry fans could be seen smashing windows and doors in anger at the Johan Cruyff stadium.

Riot Police were also called to the scene of the incident and they chased these trouble-packed fans with their horses.

The police also used pepper spray in a bid to disperse the large crowd of Ajax fans who were protesting outside of the stadium.

Recall that we reported that Ajax had this same issue in May as they visited Groningen at home, with fans clashing and throwing smoke explosives onto the pitch.

There have been mounting tensions at the Johan Cruyff Arena for weeks now which is a result of the club’s poor start to the season.

The club currently sits 13th in the Eredivisie table with one win, one defeat, and two draws in five matches this season.

Manager Maurice Steijn has been criticized for the poor stats with also technical director Sven Mislintat coming under fire as well.

Ajax released a statement in regards to the incident saying: “The management and Supervisory Board of Ajax distance themselves from the misconduct that led to the abandonment of the match against Feyenoord on Sunday and the disturbances afterward. This is not the behavior that belongs to Ajax.”

“Disappointment about the poor start to the season is completely understandable, but should never be the reason for disturbances.”

“We apologize to anyone who has felt unsafe or has been bothered by this in any other way.”
