Adama Traore will still leave Wolves this summer despite Barcelona passing on the chance to sign him permanently, according to sources, and several Premier League clubs are interested in a deal.
The 26-year-old Spaniard spent the second half of the 2021/2022 season on loan at Barça, but the Catalan club has confirmed that they will not exercise their option to buy him.
Wolves will now concentrate on permanently offloading Traore. Tottenham Hotspur attempted to sign him in January, but the two clubs were unable to reach an agreement, and 90min understands Antonio Conte’s side is still intrigued.
Oil Money backed Newcastle and Leeds United are also thought to be interested in Traore, having enquired about his services previously.
Traore’s contract is coming to an end in the next 12 months, and Wolves technical director Scott Sellars has previously stated that he has little chance of staying at Molineux.
“I think that, ultimately, Adama didn’t want to stay, he doesn’t want to sign a new contract, was offered, in our opinion, a very good contract,” Sellars told the Birmingham Mail.
“I think it was a situation where we had to look at that, he wasn’t playing, so wasn’t actually given an opportunity to show his skills, his ability, couldn’t get into the team, so we felt at the time probably to go to his hometown where he’s from, obviously he’s got a close affinity to the club and he wanted really to push that to go, that for all parties really it was the best option.
“We wanted him to go there, show everyone what he could do in Spain, obviously being back home, but ultimately, like with us, he hasn’t had the minutes that he probably wanted himself.”
Barcelona is putting together a team for next season, but Adama Traore will not be one of them. The Catalan winger joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January. There was a non-binding 30 million euro buy clause in the contract when it was signed, but Barcelona will not exercise it.
Adama Traore is a product of FC Barcelona football academy. He left Barça in the summer of 2015 to join Aston Villa after making four appearances for Barca’s first team.
Traore returned to Barcelona on loan from Wolves in January until the end of the 2021-2022 season. The Spanish club agreed to a loan deal with a £29 million option to make it permanent but that won’t happen this summer.
