The manager of Chelsea football club, Thomas Tuchel is not happy with Timo Werner’s consistency in missing “big chances” during games.

Since Timo Werner joined Chelsea football club on July 1, 2020, from RB Leipzig, he has been heavily criticized for his inconsistency at the Premier League club. Despite his inconsistency at the club, Thomas Tuchel has continued to give him a chance to prove himself.

So far this season, the 25-year-old German striker has managed to score 6 league goals and has provided 9 assists in 31 Premier League games. It has been so difficult for him to score that he spent almost two months – between February and April before he scored his last Premier League goal on Saturday, April 25, 2021, which was against West Ham United.

In that same match, the Germany international missed one of the biggest chances in the Premier League game which did not sit well with Thomas Tuchel.

On Tuesday, April 27, 2021, Timo Werner was also in action for Chelsea against Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final. In the Champions League game, Chelsea had the chance to score more goals in the first half but were able to score only a goal, courtesy of Christian Pulisic’s 14th-minute goal.

In the 29th minute, Real Madrid’s talisman, Karim Benzema scored the equalizer and forced the Champions League game to end 1-1.

Before Chelsea’s goal, Timo Werner had the biggest chance in the match in the 10th minute when Christian Pulisic gave him a pass in Madrid’s eighteen-yard box but the German striker could not score despite being as close as six yards out.

In the reaction to the “big chances” Timo Werner has been missing, Thomas Werner told the press after the 1-1 away draw against Real Madrid that Werner’s mistakes are not helping the club.

“He missed a big one at West Ham and now he’s missed a big one here, that does not help,” Timo Tuchel said. “But it doesn’t help to cry about it or to regret it all the time.

“There are millions of people who have harder things to deal with than chances that you miss. So the good thing about sport is that no one cares tomorrow, today we were sad and angry at the moment – this is normal. He is sad, he is angry and disappointed.

“Tomorrow he has a free day and the next day he must put his chin up. He’s a top guy, a professional guy. He works hard. He’s in the positions. He will not stop believing. Everyone accepts the situation like it is. With strikers, if you score the next game, nobody speaks.”

He added: “I don’t feel we are pointing fingers but of course the strikers want to score, to do it for themselves and the team. This is the highest level and when you have a good half an hour as we did with so many chances and half chances, then yes we’d wish for more composure and more precision in the decision making and finishing. The challenge was not to worry about that and to not regret it too long. We did that in the second half by defending very well.”

Chelsea and Real Madrid are expected to meet for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final round on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Chelsea are expected to beat Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge or secure a goalless draw to move to the final of the competition.
