Frank Lampard was never expecting to have things easy at Chelsea as he has noted that he doesn’t like things to go well because that put him under more pressure.
He noted that when Chelsea was enjoying an unbeaten run that temporarily kept them at the top of the league table, he was worried about complacency.
The 42-year-old English tactician who spent most of his football career at Chelsea said doing well makes him worried about what is around the corner.
Frank Lampard has been under intense pressure especially after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Everton on December 12, 2020. After the defeat, Chelsea went on to record three more defeats, one draw, and just a win.
With this drop in form, the club also dropped from the top four to the 9th spot on the league table despite the huge investment the club made during the 2020 summer transfer window.
Recall that Chelsea bought Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, and Edouard Mendy last summer for over £200 million to rebuild the club under the guidance of Frank Lampard. Though the aim of coach Lampard was to rebuild the club, fans of the club and the coach’s critics believe that the coach has spent too much not to do well.
Unfortunately for Lampard, his rebuilding process has proven not to be effective yet as the club has lost 5 league games, suffered 5 draws, and enjoyed only 7 wins in 17 league games.
The club’s next match is an FA Cup third-round game against a Championship side Morecambe scheduled for Sunday, January 10, at 14:30. Lampard and his boys are expected to use the game to halt their winless run.
“I came into this job expecting pressure,” said Lampard. “And I have to say my personality means that I’m weirdly quite strange, probably, you probably have to be to do this job at times.
“But when things are going well I put more pressure on myself because I don’t like things going well because I’ll worry about what’s around the corner.
“I worried about complacency with the unbeaten run, I was constantly under pressure myself about people telling me how great we were.
“Now I find this more challenging in a good way in terms of my job because I can find out more about myself. I can find out more about every member of the team, every member of the staff. And it actually makes my job more exciting.
“Now, of course, I understand the pressure heightens because I understand the expectations of a club like this, but I love doing what I’m doing and I never expected an easy run in this job.
“I’ve come to a huge club in the Premier League and world football in the process of a rebuild, that was never going to be an easy run. So I have to expect this situation.”
