Jose Mourinho says Tottenham Hotspur ‘could be champions in other European countries’ but noted that the Premier League has proven to be too difficult to win.

The Portuguese tactician who has won the Premier League three times with Chelsea stressed that there are so many clubs that are capable of winning the title every season which makes the league the most competitive in the world.

Jose Mourinho noted that clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal will make it very difficult for Tottenham to win the league this season despite the form his club has displayed so far.

So far in the 2020-2021 season, Tottenham has been enjoying the best form that they last enjoyed in the 2014-2015 season where the club tested the top spot in August 2014. At the end of the season, they only succeeded in qualifying for Europa League.

This season, Jose Mourinho and his boys found themselves at the top of the Premier League table once again after defeating West Brom 1-0 courtesy of Henry Kane’s 200th goal for Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Tottenham remained at the top for few hours before Leicester City won their 8th league match against Wolves. Leicester’s victory overthrown Tottenham with just a point difference.

So far this season, Tottenham has won 5 league games, drawn two, and lost a match in 8 league games which currently left them in the second spot with 17 points.

Jose Mourinho argued that the Premier League has been so tough that a club can finish a season with a very high point which might not be enough to win the league title. The Portuguese tactician who has coached in the La Liga, Italian Serie A, and Portuguese league said “in the Premier League, it is the most difficult one to be [champions]”.

“You can do a good season, you can have a lot of points but in the end you know – Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Man United, Leicester, Arsenal – you can have a good season and not be champions”, Mourinho added.

The Premier League has been regarded as the most competitive league in the world because any team could end up being the champions of the league. It sometimes gets so difficult that the second-placed team could have over 95 points in 38 games without winning the league.

For instance, in the 2018-2019 season, Manchester City won the Premier League with 98 points while Liverpool came second with 97 points. A point was all City used to win the league title.

The competitiveness of the league has seen about five clubs sit on top of the league table this season. First, it was Leicester City, then Everton came, Liverpool took over, Southampton spent about a day at the top, Tottenham took over, and then Leicester City returned to the top. At week 8 of the season, the Premier League is still as opened as it was on the first day of the season.
