Harry Maguire May Return to England after Pleading not guilty in Greece

Manchester United‘s defender Harry Maguire was in a Greek court today, August 22, 2020, to defend his alleged altercation with the police which reportedly happened on Thursday night. The 27-year-old England international pleaded not guilty after spending over one hour in the courtroom.

Recall that on Friday, Futballnews reported that Harry Maguire was arrested on an island in Mykonos, a territory of Greece where he has been for almost a week on vacation. Reports later emanated that he was arrested alongside two other Britons that are between 28 and 29-year-old.

According to a statement issued by the police on Friday, patrolling police officers intervened in a dispute between citizens of Greece in Mykonos on Thursday night. Three foreigners believed to be Harry Maguire and his two friends who were said to be involved in the dispute began to allegedly attack a police officer with their fists.

“The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos Police Station, whereupon their arrival they strongly resisted, pushing and beating three police officers”, the police statement read.

“One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed. The arrested (men) were taken to the Syros Prosecutor’s Office.”

Harry Maguire and his two friends appeared before a persecutor in Syros, Greece on Saturday. Although no journalists were allowed into the courtroom, it was gathered that Harry Maguire and his friends were accused of alleged aggravated assault, verbal assault, and attempted bribery of an official.

As of the last check, the specific crime that was linked to Maguire was not spelled out. However, if the Manchester United star is linked with attempted bribery of an official and he is found guilty, he could be sentenced to three years imprisonment according to Greek laws.

After the first hearing of the case, the Manchester United star pleaded not guilty and refused to speak to the media when he came out of the courtroom. The court hearing was adjourned until Tuesday.

According to the rules in the country, it is not compulsory that the England international remains in Greece until the case is over. Hence, he is free to return to England while his defendant will continue to represent him in court.

A statement issued by Manchester United after the hearing on Saturday read: “Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file.

“Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.”
