In the space of two weeks, another set of footballers on Tottenham Hotspur payroll have breached the guidelines issued on social distancing by the government of the United Kingdom. This set of footballers are Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko.
The guideline stipulates that no one should be seen close to a person that is not a member of his/her household. If people must train, they must train alone or with members of their households.
Recall that over two weeks ago, the coach of Tottenham Hotspur Jose Mourinho breached the guideline when he was pictured engaging in one-on-one training with the club’s new signee Tanguy Ndombele.
Less than a day after, the coach issued a public apology to admit that he was wrong and took responsibility for such an action.
On that same day Mourinho breached the guideline, Aurier was seen with an unidentified person training together in public. There was no apology from the player then and there was no sanction from the club nor from government authorities.
The club, however, issued a statement to stress that it had spoken to all its players and coaches to be role models by obeying the social distancing guidelines.
Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko breached it again
As if that was not enough, recently, Tottenham duo – Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko were filmed training together and Aurier again took the video and uploaded it on his Instagram page.
In the video which has long been deleted from Aurier’s Instagram story, the two footballers could be seen running together and sitting next to each other against the social distancing order.
After a couple of outcry on social media, the Tottenham stars issued a joint statement to apologise for not setting a good example and promised to make a donation to the NHS.
“We recognise that as professional footballers we have a responsibility to be role models, particularly during this uncertain period that everyone around the world is facing”, the joint statement reads. “We wish to apologise for not setting the right example here.
“We must all respect the government advice to minimise the number of lives lost during this pandemic.
“We cannot thank NHS staff enough for their tireless work at this time and we shall both be making a financial donation to show our support for their efforts.”
After the Tottenham footballers issued the joint statement, their club also issued a statement to stress that the management of the club would “speak to them”.
