The 48th edition of the Copa America has commenced with Argentina defeating Canada 2-0 on 20th June.
Argentina Vs Canada Result
Argentina will aim to defend their title after a convincing 2-0 victory in their opening match.
Canada struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organized Argentina defense, with their best opportunity coming from a long-range effort that was comfortably saved by Emiliano Martinez.
Alvarez put the reigning champions ahead early in the second half thanks to the hard work of Alexis Mac Allister and a perfectly placed pass from 8th Ballon d’Or holder Lionel Messi.
Argentina then doubled their lead in the 78th minute through Martinez, who latched onto a through ball from Giovani Lo Celso and calmly slotted the ball past the Canadian goalkeeper.
The goal marked Martinez’s 12th international goal and his first in the Copa America tournament.
The victory puts Argentina at the top of Group A, ahead of their next match against Chile.
Despite missing key players like Paulo Dybala and Angel Di Maria, Lionel Scaloni’s side showed their quality and determination in their opening match.
Argentina will be looking to defend their title and secure a record 15th Copa America trophy.
With Messi leading the way and a talented squad at their disposal, La Albiceleste will be a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.
About the 2024 Copa America tournament
The 2024 Copa America tournament kicked off with a historic lineup of 16 teams, including six guest teams from CONCACAF joining the competition.
This will be only the second time in history that the tournament will feature 16 teams, with the previous occasion being the Centenary tournament held in the USA back in 2016.
Meanwhile, the decision to include guest teams from CONCACAF in the tournament has added an exciting twist to the competition, bringing together nations from both North and South America.
The tournament will be played across various NFL stadiums in the USA, with matches scheduled almost every day from the group stage starting on June 20, until the final in Miami Gardens on 14th July.
The quarterfinals will take place in cities such as Houston, Arlington, Las Vegas, and Glendale, followed by the semifinals in East Rutherford and Charlotte.
With significant immigrant communities from all participating nations residing in the USA, big crowds are expected to turn up to support their teams throughout the tournament.
