Violeta Mitul, 26, was a star for the Moldovan Women’s team who passed away after a tragic hiking in incident.
She played as a defender for for Moldova senior women’s national team and was capped 40 times by her country.
Violeta would had a chance to add to her national team tally but has now been killed due to the tragic hiking crash.
Mitul was on a mountain hike with Einherji Vopnafjörður club-mates when the incident occurred on September 4.
A statement from the club said: “With deep sadness in our hearts we announce the sudden death of our player, team-mate and friend, Violeta Mițul, who died in an accident on the night of September 4, at only 26 years old.
“The community of Vopnafjörður is saddened.”
The statement continued: “Violeta was kind, energetic and smiling. She was a solid member of the team and an exemplary footballer.
“Her death is a great shock to us all and the void she leaves behind is great. Our thoughts are with her team-mates and coaches.”
According to Iceland publication Visir, police in East Iceland received a report yesterday that a woman had fallen from the cliffs at the marina on Vopnafjörður.
Violeta Mitul was announced dead when paramedics arrived at the scene. She had played all across Europe throughout her career.
