Uruguayan centre back Juan Izquierdo, who collapsed on the pitch during a match between Nacional and São Paulo, has been pronounced dead after suffering from an irregular heartbeat.
He was undergoing medical treatment before his death over 5 days after the centre-back collapsed on the pitch.
Nacional took to their Twitter account to announce the player’s death, saying, “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo.”
“We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss.”
In the match between Nacional and São Paulo, Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch in the 84th minute without coming in contact with any player on the pitch.
Players from both sides move swiftly to call the attention of medical staff in the stadium. He was taken off the pitch in an ambulance to the Albert Einstein Hospital.
Doctors in the Albert Einstein Hospital, where he was taken, claimed the player suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest that is associated with cardiac arrhythmia.
The Uruguayan was on a ventilator since Sunday, August 25, 2024, and on neurological care before he was pronounced dead.
