Manchester United legend and Birmingham manager Wayne Rooney has defended Erik ten Hag from critics amidst Man United’s dwindling fortunes.

Pressure has been cranking up on Erik ten Hag after United suffered back-to-back defeats at Old Trafford with distasteful score margin in a matter of days.

The Red Devils were first drubbed 3-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League before Newcastle United also rammed to victory with the same score margin at Old Trafford.

While some pundits have blamed Erik ten Hag’s formless and shapeless style of play for the poor start to the campaign, Wayne Rooney seems to differ with his take.

Speaking ahead of Birmingham Championship clash against Ipswich, Wayne Rooney defended Erik ten Hag and blamed Man United players for the underwhelming start to the season.

According to him, some Man United players are not performing at the level they are suppose to perform, and is badly affecting the team and their chances.

“I think it’s not going as well as they would liked or would have hoped but I think the players need to take some responsibility as well. I know some of the players in there and they’re not performing to the levels I know they can

“Ultimately, it starts and ends with the manager and that’s part of being a manager. He will get the critics, of course, after the last few weeks but I think the players can do a lot more than what they’re doing for him.”

Manchester United are 8th on the Premier League table with 15 points and have recorded seven defeats so far this campaign – their worst start to a season since 1962. They will be hoping to return to winning ways when taking on Fulham in what will be a make-or-break game in London.
