The Manchester United and Chelsea target overtook African football legend, George Weah, as the first African player to hit 47 Serie A goals.

After a blighted chance to clinch the Serie A trophy in the game against Salernitana, Osimhen waded into the challenge with full chest against Udinese.

Despite settling for a 1-1 draw, the result was enough to win the Scudetto for Napoli and Osimhen.

The Nigeria international scored the trophy-winning goal to increase his goal tally in Serie A this season to 22 goals.

Before the game against Udinese, Osimhen’s goal tally in Serie A was at par with the 46 goals scored by George Weah – the highest number of goals ever scored by an African player in Serie A.

Osimhen’ second-half strike against Udinese after a goal-mouth scramble at the Friuli stadium made the Nigeria international the most prolific African striker in Serie A.

It was an epic moment in the career of the in-form Napoli forward, clinching the Scudetto and raising the bar for African players in Serie A.

Osimhen did not only surpass George Weah’s record but also beat Samuel Eto’o’s record for the highest number of goals scored by an African player in a single Serie A season .

The Serie A Career of George Weah

George Weah saw his football career peaked when he joined AC Milan from PSG in 1995. Weah was known for his speed, athleticism, heavy build, dribbling, and goal-scoring prowess.

In his four-year stint with the Serie A giants, Weah won the Scudetto twice. His standout performance for PSG and AC Milan made him the first and only African player so far to have won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Award in 1995.

George Weah left Serie A in 1999 as he approached the twilights of his legendary career. He exited the Italy topflight, setting a 24-year-old record that has finally been broken by 24-year-old Victor Osimhen.

In his four seasons with AC Milan, George Weah was able to rack up 46 goals for the club to become the highest-scoring African player in Serie A.

What Weah accomplished in his four seasons in Serie A has now been matched and surpassed by Victor Osimhen in his three seasons in Serie A.

However, the Liberian former footballer turned politician still holds the bragging rights as the most decorated African player ever.

George Weah exited Serie A with two Serie A trophies with AC Milan. He won French Ligue 1, Coup de France, Coup de la Ligue, Liberian Premier League, FA Cup with Chelsea, including several individual awards.
