Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is honored annually on February 14.
Valentine’s Day started off as a Christian celebration honoring a martyr.
Through later folk traditions, it has grown into a significant cultural and economic celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.
Many martyrdom stories are associated with Valentine’s Day, including the story of Saint Valentine of Rome, who was imprisoned in the third century for assisting Christians who were being persecuted by the Roman Empire.
According to an old tradition, Saint Valentine was able to heal the blind daughter of his jailer.
The legend’s relationship to the concept of love has been strengthened by numerous later embellishments.
For instance, a tradition that dates back to the 18th century claims that the man wrote the jailer’s daughter a note addressed to “Your Valentine” as a farewell gift before being put to death.
According to another myth, Saint Valentine performed wedding ceremonies for Christian soldiers who were forbidden from getting married.
Although Saint Valentine’s Day is a celebrated feast day in the Lutheran and Anglican Communions, it is not a recognized holiday in any country.
