When it comes to the world of club football, the English Premier League (EPL) is regarded as the biggest, most competitive, and most popular league in the world. The league has most of the richest teams in the world and has witnessed the performance of the best football players.
Compared to other leagues in Europe, the English Premier League is not dominated by just one or two clubs. Up to six big clubs in the world participate in the English Premier League. There are seasons when lower teams have performed very well and won the league. However, this article is focused on only the top 5 teams in the English Premier League and some facts about them.
- Manchester United
The English Premier League is blessed to have this club in the league. Manchester United is considered the most successful English team in the world. The club is located in the city of Manchester and has been a dominant force in England for ages.
The arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson made the team one of the best in the world. Ferguson led the team to a lot of victories during his time at the club. His team produced one of the best players in the world, in the person of Cristiano Ronaldo. The club is also known as “The Red Devils”.
The retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 has birthed a series of failures at the club. The team has been managed by 5 coaches since Ferguson left and they have all failed to maintain the club’s dominance.
2. Liverpool
Before the creation of the Premier League, Liverpool has won the English league 19 times. However, this stopped after the Premier League was created and they had to stay for 30 years without getting their hands on the new trophy. This came to an end in 2020 when they were finally crowned champions of England.
The Merseyside team has always been at the top end of the premier league even though they couldn’t win it. Their presence was still felt in the Champions League during the early 20s. Currently, Liverpool is considered the best team in the world because of their recent form since Jurgen Klopp took charge as the manager. His team won the Premier League trophy for Liverpool after 30 years and also won the club’s 6th Champions League trophy.
3. CHELSEA
Considered one of the best teams in London, Chelsea has grown to the top stage since the English Premier League was established. The club which used to be owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich (now owned by A consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital Group) has had some of the best coaches in the world such as; Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Antonio Conte.
Chelsea has a total of 5 Premier League titles and 2 Champions League trophies to their name, plus other domestic and foreign titles.
4. ARSENAL
Being the only team to go unbeaten in a single Premier League season, this list won’t be complete without Arsenal. This unbeaten run earned them the nickname “Invisibles”. Although the club hasn’t had much success in European competitions, Arsenal has always been in the top race in English football. The club has experienced a huge decline in performance since the exit of their longest-serving manager, Arsene Wenger.
5. MANCHESTER CITY
One of the richest clubs in the world, Manchester City became a dominant force in England since the takeover by Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi group in 2008. The club has gone ahead to win a lot of domestic trophies from 2011 to 2021. Manchester City has also appeared in every Champions League season and got to the finals for the first time in 2021 but lost to Chelsea. The team is made up of one of the most expensive squads in the world. Located in the city of Manchester, the team has gotten a lot better since Pep Guardiola took charge as the coach.
