Former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has turned down Manchester United’s coaching job after two meetings with the club’s hierarchy.
United’s hierarchy, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has been locked in internal discussions and review of the performances of the club’s manager Erik ten Hag after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign.
At the time of filing this report, United have yet to decide on Erik ten Hag’s future with reports claiming that the club are likely to part ways with the Dutchman.
Some high-profile European football managers have been linked to the job as ten Hag faces an uncertain future in the Man United dugout.
Former Bayern Munich manager, Thomas Tuchel, made the list of possible replacement options for Ten Hag with reports speculating that the club had opened talks with the German.
Now, according to The Sun, United have met with Tuchel twice but have been turned down. The report adds the former Chelsea boss was intent on taking up the role and had presented his plans to the United entourage before deciding to back off.
It is still unclear why the Champions League winner turned down United’s advances but there are suggestions that his plans didn’t align with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s template for the Red Devils.
Further reports indicate Tuchel is more likely to stay away from management for a while following the deadlock in talks with United.
This implies Manchester United will have to scout for alternatives with the highly-rated manager now out of the picture.
Meanwhile, we reported earlier that Erik ten Hag has grown frustrated with Man United’s indecision over his future at the club. The Dutchman reportedly wants his future with the Red Devils sorted soon to know his stand and next plan of action.
He was linked to a return to Ajax should he be sacked by Manchester United. However, sources close to the Carabao and FA Cup winner revealed he doesn’t want to return to his former club but will be open to taking up another project in Europe away from the Netherlands.
Erik ten Hag turned a corner from his dismal run with United in the 2023-24 Premier League season to win the 2023-24 FA Cup, defeating cross-city rivals Manchester City in the final at Wembley.
