Aston Villa supporters were left seething after Lucas Digne sustained an unpleasant cut to the face during Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday.

Brentford player Bryan Mbuemo inadvertently caught Digne with a high boot leaving the Aston Villa star bleeding but center referee Michael Salisbury did not blow the whistle for a foul.

Aston Villa faithfuls were left outraged when the whistle wasn’t blown, in spite of the Frenchman bleeding on the deck.

Based on information from The Athletic, there were chants of “you’re not fit to referee” from the traveling supporters following the occurrence.

Supporters on social media also ranted at the referee’s decision not to halt the game.

A fan lambasted: “How on earth is that not a foul on Digne?”

Another fan stated: “He’s *LITERALLY* bleeding from his eye from a stud to the face!?”

And part of another tweet was furious at Michael Salisbury letting “play go on whilst he’s down with a head injury”.

The 29-year-old also went on Instagram after the encounter, posting an image of his painful looking injury.

Lucas Digne sarcastically captioned the post with a laughing emoji: “#nofreekick.”

Digne was okay to continue after he was cared for by the medical personnel of Aston Villa

Lucas Digne was fine to proceed after being looked into by the medical personnel of the club. The Frenchman was brought on in the 66th minute of the encounter, replacing Alex Moreno.

Lucas Digne has represented several clubs in the past in his career namely; Lille, Paris Saint-Germain, AS Roma (on loan from PSG), Barcelona and Everton.

He joined Aston Villa in January 2022 and the 29-year-old has scored 2 goals in 44 appearances for the Villans.

The Left-back has scored just one goal this campaign for Aston Villa in 23 appearances in the English Premier League.

His other goal for Villa also came this campaign in the EFL Cup and he has provided no assist so far across all competitions this season.

Ivan Toney opened the floodgates in the encounter to take Brentford one goal ahead in West London in the 65th minute.

However, Douglas Luiz brought the away side back into the match in the 87th minute to secure a point for Unai Emery’s men.

That draw at the Gtech Community Stadium for Aston Villa puts them 6th on the Premier League table and unbeaten in nine encounters.

Brentford, however, are presently tenth, having failed to win any of their previous six matches.

The Bees return back to Premier League action on Wednesday when they travel to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

For Unai Emery’s side, they welcome Fulham on Thursday to Villa Park.

Both sides have had impressive campaigns by their standards as Brentford appears to have cemented their place for next season’s Premier League season.

Aston Villa on the other hand are 6th on the Premier League table and although they are surrounded by big names like Liverpool alongside Tottenham Hotspur, they look to be eyeing a Europa League spot for next campaign.

Both team’s finishing position last season

Brentford ended the previous season 13th on the Premier League log while Aston Villa finished the campaign a point and a position below, on 14th.

Unai Emery was appointed manager of Aston Villa on the 24th of October in 2022 and has overseen a holistic change in the style of play and pattern of the side in addition to an improvement in results.
