Sevilla Re-sign Spain and Real Madrid Legend Sergio Ramos

Sevilla have re-signed Spanish defender Sergio Ramos on a free transfer, 18 years after he departed the club for Real Madrid.

Ramos has signed a one-year deal with the Rojiblancos, which will see him remain at the club at least until June 30, 2024.

Confirming the arrival of Sergio Ramos to the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Sevilla put out a statement which reads:

“Sevilla FC and Sergio Ramos have reached an agreement for his incorporation into the Sevilla squad.”

The 37-year-old made 58 appearances for Paris Saint Germain, scoring 6 goals and providing 1 assist across all competitions.

Ramos left PSG at the end of the 2022/23 season, following the expiration of his two-year deal with the club.

Speaking concerning his return to Sevilla, Sergio Ramos shared his excitement at rejoining his boyhood club.

He said: “I am happy to return and try to contribute as soon as possible, which is the important thing.”

In his first stint with Los Nervionenses, Ramos made 49 appearances for the Seville-based club, scoring 3 goals and providing no assist in all competitions.

The defender departed Sevilla on August 31, 2005, for a fee of €27 million, joining Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Sergio Ramos learned the basics at Sevilla, before going on to become a world-beater at Real Madrid.

He made 671 appearances for Los Blancos, scoring 101 goals and providing 40 assists across all competitions.

Ramos was linked with several clubs this summer, including Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal and Turkish heavyweights; Besiktas, and Galatasaray.

The 37-year-old becomes the 8th signing for Sevilla this summer, having signed Loïc Badé, Djibril Sow, Dodi Lukébakio, Adrià Pedrosa, Mariano Díaz, Ørjan Nyland and Boubakary Soumaré.

He will be coming into Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side to offer immense experience and solidity in defense.

Sevilla are winless in three La Liga matches this season, losing 1-2 to  Valencia in their first game of the season, before falling to a 4-3 defeat to Deportivo Alaves.

On Matchday 3, Sevilla also lost 1-2 to Girona, and that has seen them slump to 20th on the La Liga table.

Meanwhile, Sergio Ramos was born in Camas, Seville, Andalusia, and he joined the academy of Sevilla at the age of seven.

Ramos had an impressive spell at the club, and that caught the eye of Real Madrid, who signed him in 2005.

The defender spent 16 years with Los Merengues, winning several trophies, including; 5 La Liga titles, 4 UEFA Champions League, and 4 FIFA Club World Cups.

Sergio Ramos has also represented Spain in his lengthy professional football career, which has spanned 19 years.

Ramos made 180 appearances for La Roja, scoring 23 goals and providing 8 assists, before retiring on February 23, 2023.

With Spain, the defender won 2 UEFA European Championships, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

Sergio Ramos’ first chance of playing against his former club Real Madrid will come on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
