Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed his decision on his future with the club amidst reports linking him to a move to the Premier League.
Amorim, 39, has been a top target for top European clubs following his standout campaign with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal’s elite division.
The Primeira Liga and Portugal Cup winner was a top target for Liverpool to replace exit-bound Jurgen Klopp.
West Ham United were also on the queue for his services, including Bayern Munich who are also scouring the market for a successor to soon-to-leave manager, Thomas Tuchel.
We reported earlier Amorim held talks with West Ham United in London but no deal was brokered between the two parties. However, the talks was understood to be a ploy by the former Sporting Braga boss to force Liverpool to step up their move for him.
Against his projections, the subtle transfer antics backfired as Liverpool backed off from the move and proceeded to reach an agreement with Feyenoord for a Dutch alternative Arne Slot.
After the Liverpool setback, Amorim later apologized to Sporting Lisbon for holding talks with West Ham United in what has been seen as a prodigal move to mend relations with the club after a pompous transfer foray at the wake of Liverpool’s interest.
With Liverpool settling for Arne Slot and West Ham United scouring for other alternatives away from the Portuguese tactician, Amorim is set to stay at Sporting Lisbon.
In a quote shared by Fabrizio Romano, Amorim confirmed his decision to continue in the dugout with the Portuguese giants, putting an end to speculations linking him to a move to the Premier League.
“I’m staying at Sporting. I’m under contract and it’s a special moment for me, for the club”.
“Now we will try to win the third title together. Let’s try to make it happen.”
Futballnews understand’s Amorim’s U-turn is linked to the dissipating interest from Premier League clubs for his services, especially the Liverpool setback.
The highly-rated young manager had previously refused to commit his future to Sporting Lisbon in the wake of Liverpool’s interest despite having two years left on his contract.
While recently reiterating his commitment to stay, it is understood Amorim is presumably not barring a move away from Sporting Lisbon should a big European club comes calling.
