Romelu Lukaku is one of the major casualties Belgium suffered in the UEFA Nations League game against the Netherlands on Friday, June 3, 2022.

Lukaku came into the game with fitness concerns but Belgian coach, Roberto Martínez decided to start him in the Nations League game. Unfortunately, the Chelsea striker did not last more than 28 minutes before his injury issues forced him out of the game.

Unfortunately, his exit from the game gave the Dutch team more freedom to dominate throughout the remaining part of the game.

The Netherlands opened the scoring in the 40th minute through the boots of Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn. In the 51st minute, FC Barcelona’s Memphis Depay doubled the Dutch lead.

In the 61st minute, Denzel Dumfries compounded the woes of the Belgian side by scoring the third goal. While in the 65th minute, Memphis Depay sealed the victory with the Dutch 4th goal.

The Belgian side did not go down without a fight. Michy Batshuayi headed home Belgium’s consolidation goal in the added 3rd minute to end the game 4-1 in favor of the Netherlands.

Hence, the Netherlands left King Baudouin Stadium in Belgium with Romelu Lukaku injured and an emphatic 4-1 away win.

Coach Martínez said: “Lukaku’s problem was a knock. From then on, it became a more difficult match…

“This is what we needed to prepare for the World Cup. It’s a hard result, but it’s clear what we need to work on.

“The World Cup does not start until November, but with the national team it is already within 17 days. We will have to work in a specific way.”

As it stands, the Netherlands are topping Nations League Group A4 with 3 points in one game, followed by Poland, Wales, and then Belgium at the bottom of the group ranking.

The injury that befell Romelu Lukaku could add more uncertainty to the footballer’s club career ahead of the 2022-2023 season. The 29-year-old Belgian striker is not enjoying his time at Chelsea despite spending just a season at the Premier League club.

There are reports that Lukaku is working very hard to leave Chelsea this summer and is looking forward to returning to Inter Milan on loan. Reports claimed that Lukaku has agreed to return to Inter Milan on loan.

Even though Inter Milan and Lukaku have agreed on the loan deal, the final decision lies in the hands of Chelsea because Lukaku is still contracted to Chelsea.

Now that Romelu Lukaku is injured, it would be interesting to see whether Inter Milan would continue to push for the return of the Belgian striker.
