With the win, Les Blancos are two wins away from clinching the La Liga title from Barcelona that has been dominating the top for the past seven seasons.

How Real Madrid got the win over Alaves

Alaves came into the clash three points above the relegation zone. Under a new manager, Juan Lopez Muniz, the losing streak of the club extended into six after Asier Garitano’s departure.

The visitors almost took a shocking lead in the opening minutes when former Newcastle striker Joselu’s header crashed off the bar. Lucas Perez could have scored with his follow-up shot, but it was cleared off the line by Raphael Varane.

Playing at their temporary home, Real Madrid got into the driving seat in the 11th minute through Karim Benzema’s penalty. The Frenchman converted the spot-kick after Ximo Navarro fell Ferland Mendy in the box. Benzema has now scored 18 goals this season in the top flight.

Although Madrid tried keeping the visitors at bay, a lively Alaves team almost equalized through Oliver Burke. The winger, who was was their main threat forced shot that was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Benzema later in the second half recorded an assist for the second goal when he teed up Asensio. The goal was initially ruled offside by the referee. But his decision got overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Barcelona, who is trailing Madrid by four points will be traveling to Real Vallodolid on Saturday. They are hoping to get another win that could still postpone Madrid’s celebration. Real will win the league if Barca loses against Valladolid while they win at Granada on Monday.

Regardless of any result, all Les Blancos need is two wins, or one win and two draws from their remaining three games to land the trophy.
