The 2022/23 Summer transfer window was a window filled with a torrent of action as Premier League teams made signings that they hoped will chart their season towards great heights.
Players not meeting up to expectations in the Premier League
But to some teams, their signings have flattered time and time again, delivering below par performances even with their managers entrusting them to push for greatness.
Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City and Marc Cucurella of Chelsea are amongst the top Premier League flops from the summer transfer window.
Kalvin Phillips penned a six-year deal with the Sky Blues in the summer transfer window moving over from Leeds United for a fee of £42 million.
Chelsea acquired the services of Marc Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion after winning the tussle against Manchester City for the Spaniard in a deal worth £56 million with a possible £7 million in add-ons.
However, Cucurella has failed to deliver scintillating performances that would be helpful in taking Chelsea towards positivity and not doom.
Both players are not the only big names signings who have performed below expectations as Tottenham Hotspur £60 million forward signing, Richarlison, has also failed to provide impressive performances for the Lilywhites.
Just like Marc Cucurella who moved over from the Seagulls, Manchester City sold Raheem Sterling to the Blues but he has also found it tough to bring any spark of electricity for Chelsea.
The youngster, Billy Gilmore who moved away from West London in search of action with Brighton and Hove Albion has also failed to stamp his authority on the poking Seagulls side.
However, flops in the Premier League are not only restricted to internal transfers only but also for players who came on an outrageous price tag and have failed to live up to the billing.
Antony Matheus of Manchester United is a name that many expected much from but he hasn’t repaid that glittering hope of many with wonderful performances.
Manchester United watery winger
The Brazilian has provided just three (3) goals and zero (0) assist in the Premier League in spite of joining the club for a fee of £85 million.
Manchester United fought painstakingly to land the winger which also included spending massive bucks to get his service from Ajax Amsterdam in the Eradivisie.
The defender of the Hammers, West Ham United Thilo Kehrer has also been disappointing as he has failed to impress in East London.
The German defender conceded a spot kick in the eighteen (18) yard box on his debut in addition to scoring an own goal against London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Croatian defender, Duje Caleta-Car has also faced pretty much the same issues since penning a deal with the saints, Southampton.
He is embroiled in a battle to avoid relegation with Southampton as the saints currently sit rock bottom on the Premier League table.
AFC Bournemouth’s goalie, Neto, hasn’t also brought vitality to the Bournemouth side as they face the possibilities of relegating to the Championship.
Joseph Ayodele Aribo has also floated below expectations in the Premier League with performances that are uninspiring and emotionless for the saints.
He galvanized Rangers to a sit in the final of the UEFA Europa League but at the Saint Mary’s he has failed to radiate quality.
