Massimo Tarantino, a former Serie A defender, disarmed the assailant who stabbed five people, including Monza center-back Pablo Mari, in a supermarket in Milan.

The assault took place on Thursday night inside a supermarket inside the Milanofiori di Assago shopping center outside of Milan.

Massimo Tarantino, a former Serie A defender, reportedly disarmed the attacker, according to numerous reports in Italy.

“He was shouting ‘stop, stop’,” Tarantino told Italian media as quoted by Gazzetta.

“I did nothing, I am not a hero.”

It is regrettable that the attacker, an Italian called Andrea Tombolini, 46, had mental health issues. Reports state that he took the knife from the grocery store shelves and began randomly stabbing individuals.

He killed a cashier, 30, and injured five others. Pablo Mari, a defender for Monza who is on loan from Arsenal, is one of those injured and sent to the hospital. There is no threat to his life. The center back from Spain will have surgery today, October 28.

In Italy’s top division, Tarantino earned 203 Serie A appearances while playing for Napoli and Bologna. He signed up with Inter Milan for the 1997–98 season, but he left in January after only two Coppa Italia matches.

Will Pablo Mari survive the attack?

A man attacked a store near Milan with a knife, leaving one person dead and at least five people hurt, including Mari.

Mari, who is on loan at Monza of Serie A, informed the media that he considers himself “fortunate” to be alive.

Although his illness is not critical, the 29-year-old Spaniard will need surgery on Friday.

Mari was quoted as saying in the Gazzetta dello Sport: “Today I was lucky, because I saw a person die in front of me.”

The Italian daily reported that Mari had been walking in the store in Assago, close to Milan, with his wife and son, who was in a cart, when he felt a pain in his back and then saw the attacker slash another person in the throat.

Police have detained a 46-year-old Italian man and determined that there was no terrorist intent behind the event, which took place at the Milanofiori di Assago mall’s Carrefour supermarket.

It’s thought that the man at the centre of the incident has a history of mental instability.
