Oleksandr Zinchenko has revealed why he has taken the number 17 shirt at Arsenal which was recently vacated by Cedric Soares.

Soares departed the Gunners on June 30, 2024, after the expiration of his contract with the club.

Following the exit of Cedric Soares, Zinchenko requested to be handed the shirt number and he was subsequently designated with it.

Why Oleksandr Zinchenko Opted To Change His Shirt Number?

Speaking to Arsenal’s website about taking up the new number, Oleksandr Zinchenko revealed the reason for his decision, expressing that (17) “is a very special number to” him.

Zinchenko said: “The number 17 is a very special number to me. It was the number I wore as a young player, and I have always requested to wear 17 when playing for my country.”

The former Manchester City man also expressed his appreciation to everyone at the club for supporting him as he decided to alter his shirt number.

Oleksandr Zinchenko added: “With 17 being free since Cedric left, I asked if I could change, and thanks to everyone at the club for supporting me.”

Meanwhile, Zinchenko’s previous jersey number at Arsenal is (35), and while explaining the reason for his change he gave fans an “important” message.

The Ukraine international said: “It’s also very important to say that if anyone has bought this season’s new shirt directly from the club with my name and 35 on it, they can get an exchange to my new number.”

Oleksandr Zinchenko last wore the number 17 shirt during his time with Russian side FC Ufa.

Zinchenko, 27, has also worn the number 25 and 11 shirt thus far in his football career.

Oleksandr Zinchenko joined Manchester City from Arsenal on July 22, 2022, for a fee of €35 million.
