The Garibaldi had previously emerged the winners of the FA Cup in 1898, one of the oldest club competitions in England.

From the 2008-2009 season, the Garibaldi languished in the English Championships before finally gaining promotion into the 2022-2023 Premier League season. They finished 4th in the 2021-2022 Championships and qualified through the play-offs.
