After an 18-year absence from Division 1, Nottingham Forest gained promotion into the top and elite division of the English Football League in 1957. The Garibaldi had previously emerged the winners of the FA Cup in 1898, one of the oldest club competitions in England.

They are one top clubs in Europe that won the European cup back-to-back in 1979 and 1980. They went on to win the European Super Cup in 1980 and became runner-ups in 1981. From the 2008-2009 season, the Garibaldi languished in the English Championships before finally gaining promotion into the 2022-2023 Premier League season. They finished 4th in the 2021-2022 Championships and qualified through the play-offs.
