New Super Eagles Coach Finidi George Fires Warning to Super Eagles Players

New Super Eagles Coach Finidi George has fired a warning to members of the Super Eagles squad as he takes over the reins as new Super Eagles head coach.

The Nigeria footballing legend was appointed Super Eagles head coach a April 29, 2024 and was unveiled by the Nigeria Football Federation on May 13 to resume duties immediately.

Speaking after his unveiling, Finidi George urged Super Eagles players to strive for regular game time with their respective clubs or risk being left out of the Nigeria national team.

According to him, top of his criteria for inviting a player to the Super Eagles is regular action for their clubs. Players who lack game time with their respective clubs will not be invited for national team duties, he implied.

The Nigeria football veteran also added the passion to play for the national team is also sacrosanct and would not be traded for casual considerations. This means even if a player is a regular in their club’s lineup, he must show the desire to play for the national team before being called up for action.

“Nigeria comes first and you have to play regularly in your club and must have commitment.” Finidi disclosed during his first press conference as Super Eagles coach

Before he was appointed Super Eagles new coach, Finidi George took charge of the team as interim manager after the exit of Jose Peseiro. He oversaw the double-header friendlies against Ghana and Mail in March international break, winning against Ghana and losing against Mali.

The former Nigeria international-turned-manager will take charge of his first competitive game as Super Eagles call coach in the CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June 2024.
