Mason Greenwood has been encouraged to sue Manchester United after Benjamin Mendy successfully sued their rivals City.
Mendy had his contract ripped apart and was owed unpaid wages by Manchester City following his rape trial.
He resorted to suing the club after winning the rape trial and has won the case.
The court ordered Manchester City to pay him his £9 million in wages, which was frozen by the club in 2021 in the wake of his trial.
Greenwood handed a big boost after Mendy’s legal triumph
UK legal luminaries argued that Mendy’s legal victory over Manchester City could be a strong precedent for embattled footballers struggling with contract issues with their club.
Particularly, Mendy’s legal triumph is reportedly said to have huge implications for former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood, who battled a similar issue of sexual allegations and was ejected from the United squad.
The footballer’s girlfriend, Harriet Robson, accused him of domestic violence, assault, and attempted rape, leading to his suspension from the squad.
Greenwood’s suspension marked the end of his football career with United. Although the charges were dropped and United cleared him of any wrongdoing after an internal investigation, he was still barred from the club and had to restart his career elsewhere at Getafe, away from Old Trafford.
After his loan spell at Getafe, he was permanently sold to Olympique Marseille, where he is now plying his trade.
According to sources close to his camp, his representatives are reportedly not happy with the way United handled the saga, especially their decision to sell him out due to the incident.
According to them, United’s poor handling of Greenwood’s situation saboaged the player’s career, making him unattractive to potential sponsors and decreasing his earning potential as a footballer.
Recall Mason Greenwood’s sponsors, like Nike, terminated their contract with the player after he was suspended from the Manchester United squad and arrested by the police due to the allegations.
Even after he was cleared of wrongdoing, Nike has kept their distance from the player, refusing to return to the partnership.
Greenwood’s representatives believed United’s decisions on the saga turned the tides against the player from the start; hence, they have encouraged the player to sue the club, especially with Mendy winning his case against Manchester City.
Manchester United reacts
Meanwhile, according to reports, Manchester United wouldn’t have been swept off their feet if Greenwood attempted to launch a legal case against the team after the rape saga.
This is because the club believed they treated the player rightly while trying to protect the integrity of the team.
Unlike Mendy’s case, in which Manchester City refused to pay the player, Manchester United was still footing Mason Greenwood’s 72,000-a-week wages while he was on arrest and trial.
However, Greenwood’s representatives believe the player can still sue for damages to his mental health and loss of other potential earnings.
Further reports reveal Greenwood even had to liquidate his image rights company since he wasn’t bagging sponsorship deals with sports brands.
Nevertheless, it would not have been easy going for him and his camp should they attempt to sue United. The Red Devils were reportedly informed and guided in every step of their action by the club’s lawyers during the whole saga.
