Toni Kroos revealed he was very close to joining Manchester United in the 2013-14 season until David Moyes was sacked after 10 months at the club.
The former West Ham United manager Moyes became Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford in June 2013. However, the Red Devils struggled for results under the Scottish manager.
Before the manager was sacked, he saw Kroos as a perfect replacement for Paul Scholes and was heavily discussing with Bayern Munich about the German.
The legendary midfielder showed interest in moving to Old Trafford to play in the Premier League when he was 24 years old.
In a latest interview with Sport1, Kroos revealed what transpired that denied him the move to Manchester United.
He said, “In 2014, before I signed with Real Madrid, I had already agreed with Manchester United. That would have been a move from Bayern to United.”
“But then they kicked out David Moyes, who I was still sitting on my couch with in Munich, and hired Louis van Gaal. Then we both declined with thanks.”
Apart from Moyes missing out on the signing of Kroos, United failed in their attempt to bring in Gareth Bale to Old Trafford and Arsenal legend Cesc Fabregas.
During an interview in 2016, Moyes said, “When I first went into United, my real target was Gareth Bale. I felt all along that Gareth Bale was a Manchester United player, and I fought to get him from Tottenham right up until the last minute.”
“We actually offered him a bigger deal than Real Madrid, but Gareth had his mind made up on going to Madrid. He was, though, in my mind, the player I really wanted.”
“The other one I came really close to getting was Cesc Fabregas, who we thought we would get from Barcelona right up until the last minute. And Sir Alex Ferguson had told me there was always a chance Cristiano Ronaldo might come back from Real Madrid.”
