Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will exit his role as United manager this summer after a disappointing second season with the club.
Italian football journalist and transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed United had decided to part ways with Erik ten Hag before the 2023/24 season ended.
Marzio added some names have been shortlisted by the club to take over from the Dutchman.
“Manchester United had decided to part ways with Erik ten Hag before the season ended. Internal discussion had begun for who will replace the Dutch. Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi, and McKenna are the shortlisted names,” Marzio told soccernews.nl.
Erik ten Hag was contracted to Manchester United till 2025 but had faced uncertainties about his future with the club following Manchester United’s poor campaign this term.
Under his watch, United were worst off in the group stages of the Champions League and were eliminated from the competition.
On the domestic front, it has been an equally disastrous campaign for the Red Devils. They fell out of all European places on the Premier League table, finishing 8th, and were eliminated from the EFL Cup.
Despite the disappointing campaign in Europe and the Premier League, Ten Hag was able to lead United to their second FA Cup final in his first two seasons, where they will take on Manchester City again.
However, it is understood that has not been enough to convince United’s ambitious new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe of the prospects of a great collaboration with the Dutch in his new United project.
Erik ten Hag was optimistic about his future at the club despite pressure that had tanked up on him as United’s misfortunes this term continued.
He insisted he is the right man to turn around the club’s misfortunes but it was evident his chances were getting slimmer on the scale of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his new team.
As things stand, the former Ajax boss will be expected to play his last game as Man United manager in the FA Cup final against City with United set to confirm his departure after then.
