Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher has said that both Chelsea and Manchester United ‘will be a lot closer’ to Liverpool in next season’s Premier League.

Liverpool ran away with the title this time around winning the league with seven games to go after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 at the Stamford Bridge last month.

The success ended Liverpool’s 30-year title drought of the title they stormed to a dominant Premier League title win.

Liverpool is currently leading the log ahead of the final day of the 2019/20 Premier League season last games with 18 points over their nearest challengers, Manchester City.

Carragher not ruling out Manchester United and Chelsea

When asked by Fanning if he sees ‘any other title challengers for next season’ apart from City, Carragher, who is now a Sky Sports pundit stated that he is not ruling out the possibility of Manchester United and Chelsea mounting a title challenge next season.

After their transfer embargo were lifted, Chelsea had already purchased Hakim Ziyech from Ajax Amsterdam and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig to bolster the team’s attack.

With the summer yet to be declared open, Chelsea is likely to make more reinforcement into the team especially in their backline, which has been the team’s nemesis. They are the team that conceded most in the top four with 54 goals against their 67.

“The two you look at is obviously Chelsea and Manchester United, [they have a] great history in winning it. It remains to be seen with Chelsea because they’re buying a lot of players, you just don’t know how they’ll settle or how they all fit into the team.

“They definitely need a top goalkeeper, possibly both teams if I’m being totally honest, but certainly Chelsea.”

Manchester United, on the other hand, joined the big boys in the top four after racking up seven straight wins since the restart before there were stopped by Southampton and Westham in games that ended in 2-2 and 1-1 respectively at the Old Trafford.

Carragher, who described Bruno Fernandez as a brilliant signing for the club, said the Portuguese midfielder has transformed the team since joining during the winter transfer window.

“Manchester United’s an interesting one with [Bruno] Fernandes, I think he looks brilliant. Every time I see him, I love watching him play and he just has totally, I feel, transformed that team, really. So, I think those teams will be a lot closer.”

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 5-3 in their last home game and lifted the trophy officially on Wednesday.
