Manchester City‘s Kyle Walker is on the verge of joining England‘s 50 caps club. The 30-year-old right-back could achieve this feat on September 5 and 8 if he plays against Iceland and Denmark.
Kyle Walker who made his debut for England national team on November 12, 2011, in a friendly match against the Spanish national team, has played for the English national team 48 times. Kyle Walker needs just two matches to bring his number of caps to 50. Only 60 players in the history of football in England have played for the country’s national team up to 50 times.
Though Gareth Southgate has made Kyle Walker a part of his squad ahead of the European Nations League doubleheader, there is no guarantee that he would feature him in the two matches. Recall that the English tactician did not deem it fit to use the right-back in the country’s last 6 matches. In fact, the last time Kyle Walker played for the national team was in January 2019.
Hence, Kyle Walker would hope that the head coach of the team who is also a member of this England’s 50 caps club would consider him good enough to play either as a substitute or a first eleven player in the two matches.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live host John Murray, Kyle Walker believes that though he never thought he would make it this far when he started playing for the senior national team at 19, he has a great chance of joining the 50 caps club on Tuesday, September 8.
“At 19 when I first joined in the England team, I’d have said no chance”, he said. “But now I think it’s possible. Obviously, I’ve only got two more caps to get to that and that’s a big goal of mine.
“Not many players can say that they’ve got 50 caps for their country and especially for England.
“Hopefully I can be a part of that club and it’d be a very proud moment for me and my family.”
