Manchester City saw off Sevilla on penalties to clinch the 2023 Super Cup trophy after coming from behind to settle for a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The Premier League giants started the game on the front foot dominating proceedings as they looked set to clinch the Super Cup trophy after missing out on Community Shield.
The two champions of Europe were ironically locked in the same group in last year’s Champions League.
City finished top of the group while Sevilla finished third and dropped to the playoffs of Europe’s second tier.
Sevilla lost home and away to Manchester City in the group stages but continued on their dominant tradition in the Europa League, winning the tournament for a record sixth time in history
Squaring up against the star-studded City side, Sevilla had a chance to avenge their back-to-back Champions League group stage defeat and clinch the 2023 UEFA Super Cup.
It was a scrappy early start for Sevilla at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece as they played second fiddle to Manchester City as the match kicked off.
The Premier League and European champions forced the Laliga club into their half trying to find an early goal.
Sevilla sat back to soak the pressure as the treble winners continued on their onslaught with a dominant display.
While City held a commanding dominance of play, it was not a rosy ride for the Citizens, battling to pierce down Sevilla defence.
Most attempts came outside the box with Bono producing fine saves to deny the Premier League champions.
While holding up their press upfield, City looked more vulnerable at the back whenever Sevilla win possession and launch attacks.
Sevilla maintained their threats when launching counter attacks despite playing second fiddle to City.
It was still barren between both sides before Sevilla nailed their opening goal to take the lead against the run of play. En Nesyri scored a brilliant header from Acuna’s cross from the left after Sevilla broke on a quick counter in the 25th minute.
After conceding, Manchester City ramp up attempts to equalise but could not break through Sevilla’s stone wall defence. The first half ended with Sevilla leading by a goal to nil.
Nothing changed in the second half. Manchester City were still on top of proceedings going forward but needed to do more to break through Sevilla’s strong defence.
After a marathon of pressure on Sevilla’s final third, Cole Palmer scored the equaliser for Manchester City three minutes after the hour mark.
City continued to dominate proceedings after netting the equaliser but could not take the lead as Sevilla held on to settle for a 1-1 draw after the final whistle.
The match went straight into penalties to decide the winner.
Haaland, Kovacic, Alvarez, Grealish, and Walker all converted their five penalties. All Sevilla players also scored their penalties except the last taker, Gudelj, who missed his spotkick as Manchester City ran out 5-4 winners to win the 2023 Super Cup.
